Chess Terms : Bare King Explained
A bare king is a position in which one player's king is the only piece of that colour remaining on the board. In standard chess, a bare king cannot deliver checkmate, so a player reduced to a bare king can at best hope for a draw (by stalemate, the fifty-move rule, or insufficient material). In some historical chess variants, baring the opponent's king was itself a victory condition.
