Centralisation is the strategic principle of moving pieces toward the centre of the board, where they exert maximum influence. A centralised knight on d5 or e5, for instance, controls more squares and participates in more tactical operations than one on the rim. The maxim "a knight on the rim is dim" reflects this principle. Centralisation is a fundamental concept in both middlegame and endgame play.
