Chess Terms : Chess960 Explained
Chess960 (also known as Fischer Random Chess) is a chess variant invented by Bobby Fischer in 1996. The starting position of the pieces on the back rank is randomised from 960 possible arrangements, subject to the constraints that bishops must be on opposite-coloured squares, the king must stand between the rooks, and both sides mirror each other. The variant eliminates opening preparation and emphasises creativity and understanding over memorisation.
