Chess Terms : Classical Explained
In chess, classical has two meanings: (1) the classical school of chess strategy, which emphasises direct occupation of the centre with pawns (as opposed to hypermodernism, which advocates controlling the centre with pieces from the flanks); and (2) classical time control—a game with a long time control, typically 90 minutes or more per player, as distinct from rapid, blitz, or bullet chess.
