Consolidation

Consolidation is the process of stabilising a position—typically after winning material or surviving an attack—by repositioning pieces defensively, exchanging dangerous enemy pieces, and eliminating tactical vulnerabilities. A player who has won material should often consolidate before pressing for further advantage.
