What is Desperado?

A Desperado is a term used in chess to describe a piece that seems to be lost, but seeks to give itself up to inflict as much damage or distraction to the opponent as possible, before it is taken. Essentially, it is a piece that creates a situation where the loss is beneficial or strategic for the overall game play.
