The exchange variation is any opening variation in which one player exchanges pawns early, typically simplifying the position. Notable exchange variations exist in the French Defence (3.exd5), Caro-Kann (3.exd5), Ruy Lopez (4.Bxc6), and the Queen's Gambit Declined (3.exd5).
