A fortress is a defensive position in which the weaker side, despite being down material, can establish an impregnable setup that the stronger side cannot breach. A successful fortress results in a draw. Fortress positions are important in the endgame, where certain material imbalances can be held to a draw by the defender establishing a fortress.
