Interference

Interference is a chess tactic in which a player intercedes the line between an enemy's piece and its defender by sacrificing, if necessary, a piece of its own. It's a relatively uncommon tactic that occurs when the lines of protection between pieces are disrupted, often unexpectedly. It may enable lines of attack to be opened or specific pieces to be undermined.
