Loose Piece

A loose piece is a piece that is undefended—not protected by any other piece or pawn. Loose pieces are tactically vulnerable and are frequent targets for forks, pins, and other tactical motifs. The principle "loose pieces drop off" (LPDO) is a well-known tactical maxim.
