Chess Terms : Passed Pawn Explained
A passed pawn is a pawn that has no opposing pawns blocking its path or controlling the squares in front of it on adjacent files. A passed pawn can advance to promotion without being obstructed by enemy pawns. Passed pawns are one of the most important advantages in the endgame—"a passed pawn is a criminal that must be restrained" (Nimzowitsch).
