To resign is to voluntarily concede defeat before checkmate is delivered on the board. Resignation is indicated by stopping the clocks, tipping over the king, or verbally conceding. Resigning a clearly lost position is considered good etiquette; playing on in a hopeless position is generally viewed as disrespectful to the opponent.
