Chess Terms : Sacrifice Explained
A sacrifice (or "sac" ) is the deliberate offer of material—a pawn, piece, or the Exchange—in return for other advantages such as attacking chances, the initiative, superior piece activity, or checkmate. Sacrifices are the dramatic heart of chess and form the basis of combinations. A pseudo sacrifice (or sham sacrifice) involves material that can be recovered by force.
