...Without getting into synth-rock, metal or traditional hardcore:
Off the top of my head...

    -Sonic Youth
    -Mission of Burma
    -Pixies
    -Swans
    -Violent Femmes
    -Husker Du
    -Misfits
    -Big Black

Pretty impressive list, no? Obviously I'm more focused on underground/Alternative acts. Any suggestions? Who am I forgetting?

I can't believe I forgot Melvins! Great band, but who are the Wires and the Freeze?

So many great bands! I suppose Black Flag deserves a nod, even though I'm not really into straight-up hardcore. Gregg Ginn founded SST Records, arguably the greatest indie label of that era. Oh, yeah, I forgot Pere Ubu. Looks like I still have a lot of record collecting to do.

Brilliant, all of those plus The Butthole Surfers for a slice of totally wired acid punk.

I'm from Portland and I have to give props to the Wires, rock/punk band who never quite got there in the '80's. The Freeze is a very influential Boston punk band.

Remember when Prince was the weird one and Jackson was still kid friendly? Purple rain changed my young life. Darling Nikki taught me oh so much.

    Prince. Miles. Zappa.

Iconic. Prolific. Inimitable. But unable to properly sieve and edit their copious output, one and all.
