yesterday there was this program on the bbc where they were voting what was the best rock and roll band, and at the end it was a decision between the beatles, queen, and led zep. the result was predictable, led zep won. does anyone agree with this?

Im still wondering why they listed queen at all.

queen were more applicable to the nature of the discussion than the beatles, who were pop. led zep won, rightfully. shocking lack of any mention of ac/dc though! grr

The Beatles recorded in a multitude of different styles, including rock 'n roll and pop. They are definitely more germane to the discussion of "rock 'n roll" than Queen with their operatic rock style. Led Zeppelin and AC/DC are also more on the heavy metal/hard rock side of things. Great rock bands all, though.

Didn't see the show.

Seems like Floyd should have swept them all.

I love Queen too, but come on - Queen over Floyd?

Of those three, I much prefer to listen to Led Zep, although in many defintions The Moptops should win. Queen? Get real.

So, I have to cast enough credibility in songwriting and impact to crown JPG and R as the champs.

I think the whole thing was quite bizarre in some ways, I really don't see why queen was there when they could have had, say, the stones or pink floyd, ac dc, etc, I can think of a dozen bands who were arguably much better than queen.

I also have to say that the beatles weren't treated fairly, as one of the judges erroneously said something like "the beatles can't possibly be a good rock and roll band because they never developed into a live act...nobody knows what they would have sounded like live". Not to mention the claims that they only played pop music which couldn't be further from the truth.

Strictly speaking, would it not be true to say that none of these bands should actually be classified as "rock & roll"?

led zep creating a masterpiece of a song called "rock and roll" would disagree with you 😛

Led considered themselves heavily influenced by the blues. Heavily.

you can't judge a band solely by looking at just one song.

I guess I could also say, "the beatles wrote helter skelter, so they're more rock and roll than the others, period."

Led Zep's "Rock and Roll" is nothing but a fuzzed up three chord trick.

They were naff. They could not even think up interesting titles for their LP's.
Led Zeppelin I,Led Zeppelin II,Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV....

Bill Haley and the Comets. Now that was Rock and Roll.

I never really liked what I understood to be rock and roll. But I love Led Zep (more of a rock band than rock and roll imo), quite like The Beatles (surely a pop outfit), and used to be quite keen on Queen (pop rock maybe? Not rock and roll though, surely).

Hi

OK without the tongue in cheek.

True Bealtes started of as a pop band, a good pop band who
wrote their own songs, but then moved on and on.

Everyone still was writing and recording songs about finding love,
losing love..etc. When The Bealtes cut a new path and did a song
about a lonely old woman who "...was buried along with her name.
and kept her fce in a jar by the door."

Not quite your average pop material.

Led Zep were good though, they came along at just the right time.

Any earlier and they would have been swamped by The Beatles, The Stones,
The Kinks,Dylan etc who all going through their most creative periods.

Any later and they would have been caught up in the Punk scene.
