I would give it three months before starting another prose competition. These things get stale quite quickly if you don't spread them out.
As for topics, I personally prefer having a topic both because it makes it easier to come up with something and because it makes it easier to compare the entries.
The post that was quoted here has been removedI'd be open to it. Topic or no topic. Theme, theme's, no theme or dealer's choice. Too specific a theme is limiting in it's own right and should be avoided. I could do with a 1000 word limit please.
I would propose that the entries get posted in the thread. Perhaps I'm wrong, but, I don't see this negatively impacting the judging.

They have an annual book festival in our neighbouring town and run a short story competition. But you have to use just 14 words exactly. Something frivolous like that could be quite fun in the interim.
