I've been listening to Ornette Coleman lately. I'm finally seeing what it's all about. For so long it sounded without direction. On'y took me 30 some years to start to get it.

You can put me down as an Ornette fan. What have you listened to? And did a specific album or set of tunes "open your eyes" so to speak?

From his double quartet - Free Jazz A Collective Improvisation. That and A Shape of Jazz to Come

I've always been able to grasp Science fiction and Dancing in Your Head

You know, I've never heard "Science Fiction" or "Dancing in Your Head". I shied away from "Dancing" mostly because it seemed likely to be a "fusion" album and "Fiction" because it looked like a large ensemble album. What's your take on "Fiction"?

IIRC "Free Jazz" was the first Ornette album that I heard, but it took a while before I grew to appreciate it. Some time ago I read a great story that Steve Lacy told about the tour in support of "Free Jazz". I'll recount it for you as best I can if you're interested.

Science Fiction? The vocal songs are captivating. All of the wild playing going on such subtlety. As a whole it encompasses so much sound variations. I ahted it at first but there wa enough there to keep me coming back.

Dancing is a real jazz funk fest. the melody grips me and I like the way they play around it. It was my first exposure to Blood Ulmer. it actually features two guitarists.

Thanks for your take on "Fiction". I might look into it further.

A had an Ulmer LP that I really liked called "Odyssey". Is there anything else in his discography that covers roughly the same territory?

Ive heard Blood's ventures into blues which I didn't think was up to speed.

Seems like I have an Arthur Blyth LP that he was on..if so I really enjoyed that one...but my record player is kaput.

Not all like Fiction...buyer beware
