"Total fatalities:
One study of data from 2017-2022 found a total of 3,336 deaths in police pursuits, which averages to about 556 deaths per year.
Another study of fatal crashes from 1994-2002 found 3,146 fatalities in police pursuit-related crashes, an average of about 350 per year.
Some reports suggest that officially recorded deaths may undercount the actual total, with the San Francisco Chronicle investigation finding that hundreds more deaths over a five-year period were not counted in federal data, potentially raising the total beyond 3,000 over that period.
Bystander deaths:
Many of the deaths are innocent bystanders and not suspects or officers.
One report states that bystanders account for 27% of deaths.
The actual number of injuries in police chases is unknown, but it is estimated that as many as 7,400 people per year are injured, say Connecticut criminal defense lawyers.
Disproportionate impact:
Minority groups, particularly Black individuals, are disproportionately affected by police pursuits.
Black people are killed in police chases at a rate four times that of white drivers.
Minorities are three times more likely to be killed as either suspects or bystanders, according to a law firm. Total fatalities:

Police car chase fatalities are way up compared to earlier periods. Now those chases are viewed as entertainment since the car chase of OJ.
So cops PIT drivers for having a broken tail light and if the crash kills the driver, oh well, too bad. One cop interviewed about a particular fatality where the person who died was NOT the driver but a passenger, the cop goes, 'why didn't the passenger tell the driver to pull over, it's the passengers fault for this.
GREAT rationale for his CYA interview. In this era of road and business cameras EVERYWHERE means they don't have to PIT a car because of a broken tail light.
AND I FULLY expect Ultrarightwingnuts to say "SO YOU ARE SOFT ON CRIME"
So exactly why does the crime of having a broken tail light rise to the extent of a police chase resulting in the death of the driver?
@sonhouse saidUsually when the driver is black.

Or they pull them over, then shoot them.
How many times have you heard law enforcement say, "I was in fear for my life."
Really? The color of someone's skin scares you so much you're in fear of your life?
Why did you become a cop, then, you pussy? To kill blacks?

It doesnt, unless the driver flees
@Suzianne saidblacks act differently than other races when interacting with the law. their tribalism comes out

@Suzianne saidPolice is a hard job. No doubt. I heard once that a police officer witnesses or experiences 800 traumatic events in their career, mostly in random or unexpected ways, compared to most of us who see/experience 5-8 traumatic events in our lifetimes.

But there is a false perception that policing is a particularly dangerous job.
These are 2018 numbers, where there were 55 police officer deaths by violent assault, including those by firearm, is 0.0069% of 800,000 total police officers.
Meanwhile, 0.0052% of the civilian population of the United States is murdered every year.
Farmers, electrical workers, truck drivers, steel workers, trash collectors, roofers, fishermen, and pilots are all essential to society, and all of those jobs are more dangerous than being a police officer
So the higher risk is very small. A "war on police", there isn't one.

@Mott-The-Hoople saidWOW, so YOU don't have a tribe. Wow, so you live in a cave and refuse to let people visit?
blacks act differently than other races when interacting with the law. their tribalism comes out
@Mott-The-Hoople saidSo the cop makes a decision the dude is a DANGEROUS CRIMINAL and obviously having already taken the plates and can track the dude, do you think the victim is going to pull out an AK47? Would it be the end of the world if said cop just called it in and say we will catch this dude so the kid gets found and arrested so do you think that is still an executable offense?

Well, thanks for that pov, racist.
@Mott-The-Hoople saidSuppose, just for the sake of argument, the following:
blacks act differently than other races when interacting with the law. their tribalism comes out
1. 99% of police officers were Asian;
2. 9 out of 10 people shot by the police were White, often for minor infractions or no infraction at all;
3. Asian police officers who killed White people were routinely acquitted of wrongdoing or merely given some sort of administrative slap-on-the-wrist;
4. this had been going on for as long as anyone could remember, for generations---
how do you suppose White people would act when the police showed up? A bit nervous? A bit anxious? Differently than Asians? Sound plausible?

“often for minor infractions or no infraction at all;”
Crime data shows blacks commit far more crimes per capita than any other race.
They get stupid when stopped by cops.
@Earl-of-Trumps saidThat for sure is a big part of it. White guy with a broken tail light, cop goes, better get that fixed. Black dude with same problem, STEP OUT OF THE CAR NOW.
@sonhouse
cops have to chase down the bad guys, no doubt about it. Most municipalities by this time,
have set limits as to how fast a chase can go when in city limits, which is fair.
What's impossible to address here is the racism.
I am Irish but we have Hispanic adopted identical twins and we went through a LOT of racism and that by the neighbors AND the cops. When Jonathan was 12 and I gave him a new bicycle he is on the way to school, cop stops him, WHERE DID YOU GET THAT BIKE. and OF COURSE refused to believe it was his. I didn't hear about that crap till later, but that bastard cop told him to sit on the curb which lasted a FKING HOUR and OF COURSE you are not going to find ANYTHING about a 12 year old kid so an hour later the cop reluctantly had to let him go, but OF COURSE Johnathan was an hour late for school so I had to deal with the politics inside the school.
That was just one of MANY such incidence in our GOOD OLD BOY town.
How are you doing healthwise?
