Are these 'real' jobs? My granny would call that Pulling Yourself Up By Your Own Bootstraps!

Though most industries added jobs last month, hiring was mainly concentrated in three categories: Healthcare and private education, leisure and hospitality and government accounted for nearly 69% of the hiring. In addition, construction companies added a solid 39,000 jobs.

Should we include govt jobs when considering the societal and economic growth of the USA? THREE MILLION of our population are 'employed by' the government? Being paid by tax revenues? These are not jobs in the true sense of the word. These people put papers from the 'B' box into the 'A' box, that is about it. They make absolutely nothing.
I am sure everyone agrees with me. Therefore, the job report is just flat wrong.

I so wish that our liberal friends can understand the simplicity of these words.

Socialists like Shav fail to grasp that the social security payments, paid to citizens by the government each month after they turn 65 years of age, is derived from money that the recipients have put into the fund over their lifetimes.
Its OK Shav, we'll bring you along........

I do.

Just finished up mom’s taxes (she is 93). Her net income was $200K+ (most due to required IRA withdrawals) but she also received $23,000 in Social Security payments.

This is ridiculous. This is not what Social Security was meant for.

In September 1933, Dr. Francis Townsend, a California physician, published his plan for an Old-Age Revolving Pension (OARP) in a letter to the editor. According to Townsend's memoir, his plan originated when he saw two old women, dressed in once-nice, tattered clothes, picking through his garbage cans looking for food.

Beginning in Huntington Beach, CA, Townsend Clubs quickly sprang up and spread across the country, and members would meet weekly to hear speakers and advocate for the OARP plan.

Frances Perkins, Secretary of Labor, said President Roosevelt told her, "We have to have it [Social Security]. Congress can't stand the pressure of the Townsend Plan unless we have a real old-age insurance system." Social Security as passed by Congress was less generous than Townsend's plan, but as Roosevelt told Perkins, it was the Townsend Clubs that forced Congress to act at all.

We keep talking about Social Security ‘going broke’ while my mom and dad, who never needed these payments, collected them, year after year. I’m set to start collecting SS, too, in a few years, even though I don’t need it; but it’s free money! Come on, who is going to leave that on the table?

That’s why I favor the Negative Income Tax. Government should only give money to people who don’t have enough. Period.

Don’t take money from young people who are struggling and give it to rich old people. I mean, I’ll take it - who wouldn’t? But WTF, people?

Not to make short shrift of your post, but......it is their money. They earned the money, they put it into a government account to be given back out in their old age. Some people do not make th $200k a year, and some who do now may lose their jobs, or their sight, or their legs in a car wreck, and will find that money to be somewhat helpful. If they are llke SHav says he is, there will be no savings to fall back on. Many people rely on their social security.
It is already their money, Slanthead. What do you suggest? No program at all? Or, you seem to say your parents don't need it, and thus the govt could use it elsewhere? Your mom can decide to endrse her payments over to PETA, or to the abortion cllinics, whatever.
Whew! Unbelievable.

Ummm... you know that's not what happens with your SS payments, right? They don't go into a government IRA with your name on it which earns interest for 60 years "to be given back in your old age." 🙂

Those funds are immediately borrowed by government and spent and a large note with "don't worry, you'll get an annuity one day" written on it is placed there instead.

The SS 'trust fund' is empty - it's all been loaned out to a non-profit entity whose ONLY income comes from taxes (e.g. US GOV). But don't worry... to pay you in your old age, US GOV can always raise taxes on younger people...
