@AverageJoe1
Ah, you help the poor. You buy the food for the chow line? Or is it like Trump in Puerto Rico, throwing paper towels at the needy?
@no1marauder saidWell, any answer here, but likely being a wealthy family, the yacht buyer could be wealthy just by being a son of the 'big guy' (ouch), or be wealthy as a guy who works harder than other people, and makes it on his own.
Do people who inherit enough money to buy a yacht "work harder" than people who do not?
But how would this question of ours be of any impact on the issue, that someone with money can buy a yacht by writing a check? No govt involvement.
What are you trying to make out of this thread, I must be missing something. Are you angry?
@averagejoe1 saidActually, the OP of the thread was about government subsidies to wealthy folks who clearly don't need it. Thus, my post regarding the absurdly preferential tax treatment of yachts was on point while your discussion is off-topic.

@no1marauder saidBut see McHill OP. He says “repubs ‘ are first to run for govt help in a disaster. Really? Dems don’t? And I prove to him that WY receives the LEAST govt handout of all states. He lies. Jester will believe him. I explained to him that both parties have created ALL govt subsidies over decades. His OP is crap.

That is why I had to settle him and make it interesting. Sonhouse took off about money, referring I guess to not having to make money living under socialism . The socialists, including me, will, but not those living under it. What better example than a clear yacht analogy. Then we lose you as you go off on govt benefits, created of course by both parties.
Since the OP is wrong on at least 3 points, how can you find me to be off of a point that was never made?
You fellers are floundering. Give McHill a msg for me. His house ⛺️ under socialism. Will I be able to dock in his harbor?. Maybe not, since govt will own everything, including him.
@no1marauder saidYou know, Bernie harped a lot about what money people ‘need’.

Hey, you gonna walk up to me in our adjacent back yards and tell me I don’t need 2 barbecue grills. ? Or a car for my daughter, when my wife and I have 2, which is a gracious plenty?
Are you and Bernie going to form an agency to establish your definition of need?
I need a lake house to be secluded with my family, unwinding and growing on weekends. Neighborhood is noisy. I need it. The guy paving the street needs a bowling alley to unwind after work. Mine costs more, my need. What in the hell are you going to about that? Send a guy to my house? Demand my papers?
Why have you never once typed the word freedom?
@averagejoe1 saidYou have a very skewed perspective of need vs. want.

@sonhouse saidTime for a new schtick Sonhouse.

McHill led you fellers down a dead end path.
How can y’all deride success and money and prosperity when it is the atmosphere around you. You just gonna stop breathing?
@wildgrass saidGood thought. Marauder said need, so I stayed on point as he prefers. All due respects, I am working for a few years and save up to buy a lake house that I have wanted for years. In your fantasy society, tell everyone here what my first steps will be to acquire the house. It is large and expensive, know that going in. I have 2 kids, it has 8 b’rooms and a pool.
You have a very skewed perspective of need vs. want.
Or tell us what Bernie would require. Debates should be fun, let me have it!

Dear Joe - Seattle has a lot of harbors you can dock in, and you're welcome here anytime. The Seattle Chess Club and Public markets would be nice places for you to visit. While I'm on these forums I have a little announcement:
You folks won't be seeing my posts as much here in the future. I'm not departing like Suzianne did, but I've said pretty much all I want. Joe -you can go on with your accustomed Liberal bashing if you like, but you'll be doing it without me. I may drop in here for a rare comment in the future but will be spending the bulk of my waking hours working, exercising, and studying chess. The Washington, Oregon, and US Open chess championships will be coming around again next summer, and I plan to do my share of winning in all of them.
...and to you Liberals here, I'll be with you in spirit. 🙂
@mchill saidMy posts have been referring to societies of socialism, not the USA.

Awman, I need you as a foil. I learn by watching games, so will key in on yours. I was a hospitalized patient of covid (attacked my lungs big time) and ratings have dropped from 1280 to 975 in 20 months. Covid is dangerous. So, wear a mask while breathing over the board. Good luck. And hey, along with the other conservatives this has been an enlightening journey. I still don’t know exactly what socialism is, except that it ain’t for the likes of me and mine!
@averagejoe1 saidSomehow you keep misinterpreting my comments. In my fantasy society the government collects from it's citizens what is necessary to run basic operations.

@wildgrass saidMany posts back you had colorful comments about the yacht, and then someone (Marauder?) made a statement about the amount of money that people 'need', which gave me the creeps, and you responded simply that there may be a distinction between want and need, which would be a great thread.
Somehow you keep misinterpreting my comments. In my fantasy society the government collects from it's citizens what is necessary to run basic operations.
So I don't get what you mean here, changing gears to simply state that taxes are (properly) used to run basic operations. That is certainly the purpose of government/taxes, and I have no problem with that. How have I misinterpreted a basic USA concept? You have not written about a fantasy society, or I missed it somewhere. I hate it about McHill, there are others that would be better to take a leave of absence..
