A band of robbers ride into town with guns drawn and demand all the gold in the bank. They are called criminals. They return the next year on the same day and repeat their demand. Again they are called criminals. They put on uniforms and return each year on the same day.
Eventually they are called tax collectors. Finally, the smallest and least offensive of the bandits rides into town unarmed and the townspeople give him their gold without a struggle.
The state has arrived.
Or so it can be argued.

Cash for clunkers is a prime example of this. Now this thread does not go far enough to pinpoint the thief. The federal reserve is the true thief. The federal reserve is not a government entity and answers to no one at all for anything. Something that powerful and yet Government can not audit it. No checks and balances. A bunch of murderous thieves to the core. Would the founding fathers approve of this?
Not necessarily. In theory, the state is providing something in return for taxes. In execution, it can be a whole other matter.
