An idea I've been toying with lately is one of endorsement replacing the standard notion of election.
Essentially, every legislative decision is decided by a referendum. Every man, rather than voting himself can 'endorse' a representative to use his vote for him.
Perhaps votes can be contracted- vote 'no' on proposition 297 or you don't vote for me at all.
An advantage of this system is that it is proportionally representative- there are quite literally no wasted votes, and no party has a number of representatives greater than the number of votes cast for them. Any third party will be heard.
Representatives would be completely accountable. If you dont like George Bush, you can still cast your vote for ('endorse'😉 another Republican without splitting the party or 'giving' a seat to a Democrat.
Rosseau commented that elective democracies aren't free; they are free only during an election year.
