The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement saying they were "recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution."
Let's assume, arguendo, that ALL 6 clotting episodes were caused by the vaccine (not at all clear, but let's assume).
That's still LESS THAN ONE IN ONE MILLION!
All we hear out of the CDC is that the more infections, the more variants and how we have to remain vigilant until we can control COVID with the vaccines and scary new variants and the B.1.17 monster, SA, Brazilian, etc. etc., ad nauseum.
But all of these awesome reasons we need to stamp out COVID aren't worth allowing people to VOLUNTARILY assume a risk that is less than 1 in 1,000,000???
Somebody defend this. I'm curious.

@sh76 saidWhen people grossly overestimate low probability events, they often make terrible decisions. If 300 people in the US got blood clots but no one else died from COVID it would indisputably be an excellent trade off.

I don't get it either, but since this is roughly a once in a century event, one must expect some (less than) intelligent choices along the way.
@sh76 saidI'm fine with it. There are available substitutes for the J and J vaccine that do not pose the health risk it does. A pause to better assess its effectiveness v. its dangers seems quite prudent under the circumstances.

EDIT: There's an emergency meeting tomorrow at the CDC to decide whether to continue the pause.https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2021-04-13/us-urge-pause-johnson-covid-vaccine-blood-clot-concerns
Surely a one day pause to evaluate the data is eminently reasonable.
@sh76
My uncle is in the business of Checkers and he says: "There were reports that 3 people so far have gotten blood clots while playing chess. However, there is no clear evidence yet that chess causes blood clots. Until there is absolute scientific proof that chess causes blood clots there is probably no cause to be alarmed."
@no1marauder saidIf all the pause lasts is one day, I'll partially withdraw my criticism.

I sincerely hope to do so.
If it lasts a few weeks, hundreds of additional people will likely contract COVID to avoid a 1-in-a-million chance of blood clotting.
That's not a great trade-off.
@mott-the-hoople saidYah, that’s what the Indians said too.

@Duchess64
Yeah, it HAS to be because of possible litigation.
It COULD NOT be just to get to the bottom of the issue and fix the clotting problem?
Nah, it HAS to be because we care so less about people we ONLY care if we get sued.
Sure, that's the ticket.
@sh76 saidAbsurd. That assumes that there are no easily available replacements for the J and J vaccine when there are in fact two. And J and J has been used in less than 4% of total vaccinations in the US.

The company recently spoiled 15 million doses of its vaccine with apparently little effect on the rapidly increasing number of daily vaccinations in the US.
Again, I'll leave it to the CDC to make such determinations weighing all such factors rather than ill-informed internet posters.

@no1marauder saidWhat's absurd is to assume that ever missed J&J vaccine will be replaced by an mRNA one. There are major vaccine sites that are distributing J&J and it will be a while before they can get shipments of other doses. At 7 million doses, J&J is averaging close to a million doses a week. A weeks-long hiatus will likely mean hundreds of thousands of fewer vaccinations.

The CDC has hardly been infallible and this overly conservative decision is consistent with the outsized importance it gives to CYA messaging and action.
