I believe it is the automatic moderator program doing those alerts.
The automatic moderator doesn't physically tap the large exclamation point next to (to the right of) the down thumb icon.
If it was strictly automatic why would we be seeing a number in the icon? If you see a 2 in the thumbs up icon it means two people thumbed up a message. A 2 in the thumbs down icon means two people thumbed down a message, and a 2 in the alert icon means two people have alerted the moderator. A moderator is an actual person who looks at the message and decides if it violates the TOS (terms of service).
The automatic moderator (AM) is programmed to recognise any of a preset list of offensive words, and will automatically remove a post if it 'sees' any of those words. Haven't you noticed how people are able to get passed the AM by intentionally misspelling the offensive words?

Then it got removed.
I've seen alerted posts (including my own) that just sat there for the better part of a day, and then mysteriously became un-alerted... the number disappears from the ! icon. Those alerts were not automatic. So far none of my alerted posts have been removed. (knock on wood)
It doesn't take a TV detective with a big bushy moustache to figure out the difference.
