‘The thing I fear, is not American unilateralism; it is actually American isolationism... .’

So says Tony Blair. What happens to the world if America retreats back into isolationism, and 'leaves everyone alone' as many people on this forum seem to suggest they should do? Are they not then leaving the world at the mercy of 'the Church Militant of the 21st century' (David Selbourne) - Islam?

The US arms industry is so powerful, yet so dependant on the continuation of conflict, that they (and many other large companies) would not allow the US to take an isolationist stance.

I think that Blair's fear is what would happen should Bush fail in his attempts to bring democracy to the ME, and then run back to 'sulk in his tent'. An America that then decides to sort out all of it's own problems and ignoring the rest of the world.

Yes, the whole world is helpless without Big Daddy to protect them.

Of course it's not helpless, but who would you rather have in control, America, or radical Islamist states?

What a choice you offer Evil or pure evil.
I would rather none of them .
America certainly does not control the world at the moment and i dont think that they ever will.

It is ridiculous to suggest this is an either-or position.

Indeed, if the US were ever to back off, then radical islam would lose one its main recruiting agents.

Here's a secret for ya; the world's too big and complex for either the US or radical Islamist states to control.

Seriously, do you actually believe that if the US stopped invading countries that radical Islamist states would be "in control" of the world? Where did you get such an odd belief?

*It is my understanding that the US runs a trade deficit meaning that if all trade with the US stopped, the world economy would improve.
*Radical islam does not control a significant portion of the non-US world and would probably loose ground without the US as a bad example of democracy.
*Without arms being supplied by the US many conflicts would die out simply due to lack of military suplies. (Israel for one).
*Without the CIA which has admited to causing many of the conflicts around the world, many future conflicts would simply not start (ie people would actually get to choose thier own governments instead of being given the CIAs favourite.
*Without the US global warming would take a dramatic downturn.
*without the US we would have a lot more oil for the rest of us.
All the above of course are based on a case where the us simply disappeared and turned into virgin land. If they simply become isolationist then most of the problems they are causing the world would simply be magnified.

Much like the situation in Iraq, America has bred terrorism with anti-Western sentiment and we now appear stuck with it.

The best we can hope for is that America does not breed more terrorism. It's blocking of calls for an Israeli cease fire leaves little hope.

Countries like Australia can not afford the "Holmeland Security" that America has in place. We are at risk of the terrorism bred by America.

Australians like STANG and I cop flack from Americans for objecting to the ongoing deaths of innocent people.

Americans have to realise that much of the world sees America as two faced.

Two faced. Two towers.

Are you and/or STANG organizing any protests about the Australian government supporting the overthrow of East Timor's elected Prime Minister because he refuses to give Australian companies the rights to ET's offshore oil for a pittance? www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=44&ItemID=10480
