no, this isnt a dig as americans or america, this is a dig at our pathetic news coverage... all i got the other tuesday on the telly was updates on super tuesday, i live in the uk.... like i care... no mention of the war in iraq, no mention of hardly any uk news... what difference does super tuesday make to me..?
okay, it'll be nice to know who wins and becomes president but that's about it... a quick five minute slot on the news will do...
later on i turn on the telly and channel 4 are going on about a world recession because america is facing one.... what? are they the only country in the world with any economical strength, sure it'll make a difference if they have one, but what about the financial weight of japan and china and even europe..?
why is so much news devoted to american news when we dont live in the usa?

The reason you are interested in the US economy is because of the housing problem due to the bungling in the US with sub-prime mortgages. Their banks and investment companies packaged these bogus scams to investors worldwide who bought the repackaged debt and are now losing billions since not many people in the US can make the super-high payments once the sub-prime part of the mortage turns into triple or quadruple the monthly payment. These people default on their mortgage and the repackaged investments become worthless.
So, couple that with a general slow down in the US economy meaning even more job losses and even MORE mortgage defaults since people have no income when they lose their jobs, and you can see pretty quickly how worldwide investors get jittery and pull their investments out of companies/banks that invest in the US and buy these sub-prime mortgage repackaged investments which in turn, pull down your stock markets.
As for the coverage of the US presidency, well it is important since whoever gets in will have a huge impact on US foreign policy as it pertains to the middle east, which inevitably will pull europe along with it since you'll be called on to participate ala iraq and afghanistan.

Second. Turn off your TV. The net has plenty of newspapers and in depth think tank websites that can give you a more realistic or at least a more detailed account of events.
Third. It is not a bad idea to read views from other countries both on the left and right to get a different perspective.
Lastly, CNN, FOX and the rest are pretty poor at news coverage...

US media is run by large multinationals who have all kinds of economic interests in all kinds of different markets. And they bring the news to make profit. They either do what the advertisers want them to do, or they do what their mother company wants them to do.
Can't blame them. If they don't then that's against the law. They are obliged to their stockholders to do everything they can to make them as much profit as possible.

I do not think we can debate people's interest in the subprime crisis ... the biggest richest country is losing a huge amount of money ....
We can debate: will we care so much about the US in a year or two? Will the subprime crisis cut the US from our future caring? Sure much of the debt was syphoned off to the rest of the world via securitization ... however the psychological effect of transferring bad US debt to other countries may well be almost as bad for the US as if it had never been transferred (the US financial world may not be trusted, US dollar not trusted etc). This in accompaniment with the Iraqi farce, which has cut trust in the US military, means : the US has lost a lot of its image.
The struggling US of today is not the awesome power it was 10 years ago ... will we care about them in 2 years time ... or is the US becoming just another country?
