Annan demands Darfur resolution

"UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has told the Security Council that action must be taken to end "appalling" crimes in Sudan's western Darfur region.
He urged the 15-member Council to pass a resolution imposing sanctions on those who block peace moves in Darfur.
But the BBC's UN correspondent says the Council cannot agree on how the region's war crimes should be tried.
More than 100,000 people are thought to have died and two million have fled their homes during the two-year crisis.
Last year the UN described Darfur as the world's worst humanitarian crisis."
"Many Council members want Darfur's war crimes to be tried in the International Criminal Court in The Hague - but the US, which does not recognise the court's authority, opposes this.
Russia, China and Algeria may also demand that a travel ban and financial sanctions on Darfur's accused be toned down."

Originally posted by ivanhoeThis is a perfect illustration of why so much of the criticism of the UN is wholly unfair. We hear the UN is pathetic and weak and completely fails in its duty to prevent humanitarian disasters worldwide, yet it can only ever have the strength of purpose and morality of its component countries. Of course the UN failed the people of Rwanda and is now failing the people of Sudan, but it failed because many of the most powerful countries in the world, including the US, Russia and the UK, allowed it to fail. The US, arch critic of the UN, is also one of the greatest engineers of the UN's failure, since it doesn't pay its dues, doesn't recognise the court in the Hague and only supports military adventures when they come with oil attached. Russia is also appalling in this regard.

As an aside, when the UN is allowed to get on with it, as its health wing (the WHO) has been in its attempts to rid the world of nasty diseases, it is rather successful. Thanks to the UN, we have no smallpox, barely any polio and have just seen a 40 per cent drop in worldwide cases of measles. It is difficult to comprehend how many human lives this has saved.

Why should we applaud and support slavery?
Slavery is defined as any "dictator who can take a soul from any street and dispose of them at will."
Are there any of those kind of dictators in the UN?
Why would a moral person who worships ms. Tubman want to support that?
SVW goes onto the underground railroad, listening and wondering at the courage. And the GOD DAMNED LOSS OF IT!!!

But you have to remember that toppling Sadaam came at the cost of an estimated 100,000 civilian deaths during the course of the war and many more since. It is my absolute belief that a person's life is equally important whether they live here in Europe, or in the US, or in Iraq or wherever. So imagine if the cost of getting rid of Sadaam was that the US had to agree to suffer a September 11 disaster not once but 30 times over? Would any US citizen agree to pay that price?

Freedom costs lives?
Yea. So stop supporting the UN myth that just by joining, you are a "valid" member.
What say you? Enough of the myth?

I have put a spell onto rhp. didn't you notice? That people can no longer just spout in favor of Saddam?
Shame on you. You are supposed to notice. That is a hell of a curse. Please notice in future. Snark. SVW
