I speculate that someone hanged him, realized that the slow strangulation wasn’t going as planned (snapping the neck works only if there is sufficient drop, and is pretty near instantaneous death), and shot him to speed up the death struggle and skeedaddle.

Double Ought buckshot is 9 to 12 pellets of .32 caliber.... that'll tear a man's head off at close range. or punch a fist-sized hole in a man's chest..

I've owned several shotguns, I think I know a bit more about it than you.
00 Buck is used for hunting Deer in heavy brush, and it is not for small game.
There are other Buckshot sizes, Number One Buck is best for everything, IMO.
