Are people more extreme when on internet forums?
Any debate platform tends to push people into extreme positions. This includes classroom debates, formal debates, politics, etc, but when you add the anonymity of the internet it gets even more extreme.
[edit]
Do you consider yourself and extremist, or do you not feel dominant?
Originally posted by JS357No, mostly by poets, artists, bleeding heart liberals and clone armies of right wing one dimensional squares all reading from the same cook book, real extremists don't talk, they act. If they go on the internet at all, its to release a manifesto of hatred. As to the phenomena of 'extreme views', i think the Internet is simply a more accurate reflection of what people actually think than is portrayed in popular media, who for political reasons, cannot reflect what people actually say and think.
Worth a study, anyway.
For example, youtube comments are not really moderated, you find all kinds of views, what people actually think and because of having the safety of sitting in front of a PC monitor they are not afraid to say it. Extreme? No, real, yes.
Id just like to say, that If I were to release a manifesto of hatred i would set it to Prokofievs Montagues And Capulets, it always makes me feel like a mad scientist with a death ray hidden far in the hills when i listen to it.

I know that I talk about balancing budgets, reducing the police state via NSA/NDAA, withdrawing troops from countries around the world, and term limits for career politicians.
God help me, you people must think I'm a raging lunatic extremist!! 😲

Overall, I don't think "extremists" dominate forums, it seems like the average person on a forum follows normal societal rules of ettiquette. It's alows the (forum vesion of) "loud" people who get the most attention, just like in the media and and in person.

It might be noted that extremism can be defined either by beliefs or by actions.
Since internet forums are typed words only, sometimes the words are more extreme even than the beliefs the represent.
