Earlier this month Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin accused the US of living beyond its means "like a parasite" on the global economy and said dollar dominance was a threat to the financial markets.

Discuss.

Are you implying that US = "progressives"?

It's a good thing we have that tremendously productive Old Money culture to keep them in check. Inheriting all that wealth is hard work, especially when you know you are incompetent to get it back if you lose it!

Well it is basically the progressives verses the crazy radical bigoted job stealing, credit downgraded Tea Party in the US, wouldn't you say?

Russia, as I understand it, has worse debt problems than the U.S. So it seems like a strange source to be listening to for fiscal advice.

Hmm, maybe I'm wrong - as I look deeper it seems like it's really not that bad at 9% of GDP currently. I guess this is S&P's forward looking take.. but we know they always get things right... (!?)

Who else then opposes the US living beyond its means every fiscal year other than the Tea Party?

But the world financial system is basically built around the US fiscal future. So basically the actions of the US will have a global effect whether we like it or not.

I suspect S&P is trying to punish the USA for not bowing down to the rich enough.

Don't be a fool. The S&P are merely tools of the Tea Party and Vladimir Putin. Get a grip man!!

The S&P said flat out that it was infighting about raising the debt limit that spawned their decision to contemplate a downgrade. Had the Republicans not held a gun to the country's head, there would be no downgrade.

US Treasury bonds are still much, much safer than 99.9% of private companies who enjoy a AAA S&P rating.

But hey, you got the downgrade you wanted. And YES, despite what you say I absolutely 100% believe that's what you wanted to happen.

I would have thought Putin would simply deal with a parasite by kicking it to death.

If there's one man! who could match Chuck Norris ...
