In essence, new laws coming into effect will see businesses that employ illegal immigrants, potentially losing their business license ... dismissals have already begun for those who can't prove their right to work....many are returning to their own countries.
There's no question it will be effective, but is it a strategy that all States, and indeed, Nations, should employ?
I think yes.
Whilst I am, in the long-term, in favour of multicultural societies and transient workforces, there is no doubt that the immediate questions such as "taking our jobs" and "suppressed labour rates" raised by sudden or increased influx, must be answered and dealt with if we do not wish to further alienate our own citizens (as long as the unemployed citizens then take the jobs and aren't just being windbags).
Bring artisans and skills that benefit the nation ...
....not more maids, gardeners, plumbers and take-away restaurants that further bloat already bottom-heavy local and national economies.
As a side-issue, reducing the urban camouflage likely also reduces opportunity for all types of undesirables to operate.

there were all kind of police cars going back and forth yesterday, and the day workers, usually out in force in those areas, were down to around 5. who weren't there when i drove back. maybe an enforcement drive is going on.

I live in Scottsdale, Az and it's doom and gloom scenarios for the most part.
Worries are that companies are less willing to move here, finding labor for new hires, inflationary, decline in tax revenues, and it makes us look bad overall - sort of a revisit of the anti MLK vote a while back.
But, it simply is an enforcement tool for exisiting laws, and that is a huge argument.
Originally posted by badmoonThe latter is a key issue. When I lived here before, I was the entire payroll department of a small non-profit and I was there when the laws changed so you had to have proof of legal status to be hired. I can't remember the details because I worked there from '86 or '87 to '94 -- quite a while ago! You could look in any of my employee files from the date the law went into effect and see the documentation -- the form as well as the photocopies of the documents provided. So I'm amazed that it's been so easy to ignore this law. Then again, we had government agencies traipsing through our files all the time to make sure we were in compliance with this and that ...

Why get cheap products when we can pay more for them?
Hell, just give those lazy bums some welfare too.
Funny I find myself employed in the "bloated bottom-heavy local economy" and I find very little competion from Mexicans or other legal or illegal immigrants. Now I am all infavor for enfocing the laws of the land, I think the laws work in keeping imigration to a manageble level. But trying to kick everyone out is just political posturing. It is not going to happen. Our country would not funtion. There are not enough Americans like myself willing to do this type of labor. And this "Bloat of bottom- heavy economy" keeps this country alfoat. And this whole "burden on social services" argument is bunk also. Hell without health care I AM a burden on social services.
