Arkansas Passes a Near-Total Abortion Ban with No Exceptions for Rape or Incest
Arkansas has passed a near-total abortion ban that outlaws any procedures, even in the case of rape or incest, unless the life of the fetus or the mother is in danger, making it one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the U.S. Supporters hope that it will eventually be argued in the Supreme Court, where it could reverse the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that grants the right to an abortion nationwide.
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson signed Senate Bill 6 into law on Tuesday, which states that performing or attempting to perform an abortion is an unclassified felony, and anyone who is charged with doing so faces time in prison or fines of up to $100,000.
The bill is unconstitutional based on the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and expected to be struck down in state courts, much like similar bills in Alabama, Ohio and Georgia have over the past few years. But that is the intention of the bill, Hutchinson said, and he hopes that it will eventually make its way to the Supreme Court, where a conservative majority — now solidified with the addition of Justice Amy Coney Barrett in place of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — could use this case to strike down Roe v. Wade nationwide.
@earl-of-trumps saidIt will definitely not last, but the Republican lawmakers knew that.
The article does not mention which "terms" you can no longer have an abortion so I assume then, that it is ALL?
It will never last and surely neve reach the Supreme Court.
The point is to pass a bill knowing it will be defeated in court so they can appeal all the way to the Supreme Court and rely on the overwhelmingly conservative SCOTUS to overturn Roe V. Wade.

I think they will find that the Supreme Court tells them to go play the banjo
@Earl-of-Trumps
WIth Kavanaugh and his buddies installed by Trump? Right wingers all.
The only way we can make SCOTUS equal is to add a couple of new ones, 11 or 12 members chosen this time by Dems.
Right wing the supreme court may be, but ultimately, they are in a position of responsibility. And with that responsibility generally comes historic weight and international reflection.
Yes. The previous US administration was bat poop crazy and a very real exception to the rule.
But the supreme court, right-wing as it is, functioned as it ought to. It threw out madhatter cases about election fraud, without even blinking.
They can only go so far on this issue, without seriously undermining privacy laws.
@shavixmir saidTheir election ruling doesn't mean much since zero evidence existed to justify it, and about 60 courts through out the case for that very reason. The same conservatives who wouldn't buy into Trump's election fraud claims were mostly the same ones who voted to acquit Trump during the impeachment, for a second time. In other words, their tune didn't change, they just had nothing to work with here.

The Supreme already handed the previous conservative president, Bush, a victory during an election with very similar circumstances: a former Democratic vice-president won the popular vote, and the Republicans stopped ballots from being counted while the Republican candidate was just barely ahead, Just like with mail-in ballots, the more the votes were recounted, the more the Republican's lead shrunk. The mostly conservative Supreme Court stopped the recount, effectively handing Bush the presidency.
Also, half of the conservatives on this Supreme Court were picked by that "bat poop crazy administration".
You could be right about the SCOTUS judges feeling the weight of their votes and respecting the integrity of their position. But who knows. Conservative judges on SCOTUS failed America before. Not too long ago, SCOTUS decided corporations are people, letting Big Business donate insane amounts of money to buy elections.
Again, you could be right. I hope so. I hope my post is proven wrong.
@vivify saidBecause, well, you know, Arkansas. (Cue the banjo music.)

@earl-of-trumps saidOne can only hope (but not holding my breath).
Got it.

Except that this is the only reason for their (the conservative judges) positions on the court. This and their support for corporations over people.
@sonhouse saidWhy?

Why must you be in power ALL THE TIME.
Since the 70's the SJC has been liberal, 50 years!! Did the Repubs demand to add judges on just to "make it fair?" no.
If you dems start it, you are creating a real hornets nest.
And as an aside, Kavanaugh/Barrett won't support that.
@earl-of-trumps saidMitch McConnell started this.

@shavixmir saidwhy, because he told obama what the law was?
Mitch McConnell started this.
If McConnell did not pull that stunt, Ginsburg is still going to die and Kavanaugh still gets in.
