Stolid? I don't know about that, but I've never been to the U.S. so I don't know how they compare to Americans. Schröder was chancellor for many years before he lost against Merkel.

Sarkozy doesn't come across as very charismatic to me, but perhaps the French disagree.
maybe Sarkozy appear more fun and so more balanced. we don't get much French election news here but Royal seemed kind of serious to me.

maybe Germans are less stolid than Nederlanders 🙂

I'm not an expert of French politics but I am not aware of any scandals surrounding Chirac.

maybe people assumed he had had affairs or was capable of it (didn't he have a longtime mistress AND a love child? or was that someone else?)

whereas Royal looks too goody-goody to be so capable.

Affairs, maybe not. Scandals, definitely. Google "Chirac corruption" to pick up a few allegations.

Back to the "beauty" theory, Sarkozy may have gained a few points through his wife.

Indeed. But I think the scandals being discussed here are tadger moistening related.

Yes, yes of course. But sexually related scandals, I meant.

Sarkozy married Bruni after the election.

The Dutch are generally open, very informal, pragmatic, friendly and often rude. The Germans are similar but quite formal. Didn't have any problems with the Germans I encountered but I never lived there (though I did have German roommates).

my bud probably only had a short vaca there.

i was expecting it to be dark and overcast there, like Mordor, but it was nice and sunny! and they have McDonalds!

most of the reading i've done on Germany was probably The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (by William Shirer), consumed in high school. which would account for the expectations of a black climate.

i was surprised the same way when visiting Russia.

and, so far, no serious counterarguments to the OP.
