Why would gravity cause time dilation?
You have your cause and effect backwards. Einstein came up with his General theory of relativity based on his own thought experiment which is now called the "equivalence principal".

This always comes up when GR is explained to the layman like you. It isn't because the equivalence principal is absolute because acceleration for G force is not always required for time dilation as speed is enough without acceleration for time dilation.
In other words, the equivalence principal is only a thought experiment that led to Einstein coming to the conclusion that time dilation causes gravity in a similar way that speed does.
You could prove me wrong if Einstein made the statement that "Gravity causes time-dilation". He would never say something completely backwards from his theory. Time dilation causes gravity. If you understood his equations you would know that. Look up his GR equations. Notice the "=" sign and the "T" for time.
Lots of people have misinterpreted Einstein's GR because they don't understand it. You are just repeating ignorant statements from people that don't understand it. If gravity causes time dilation what causes gravity? Don't tell me the bending of spacetime. Space and time are inexorably linked. Space cannot bend without time dilation.
You and many other people have made the same false interpretation. You have your cause and effect backwards. Unfortunately, Einstein is not here to correct you hacks that are butchering his theory.
