The fat acceptance crowd does a few things right:
- Appearances are superficial; there are good people who are "ugly," and bad people who are "beautiful."
- Some people do suffer from actual medical conditions or other issues that prevent them from being able to really be fit
- Beauty standards do result in a lot of mental anguish especially for young women, and also young men, and this can lead to mental health issues.
But, having said that, we also want to make society less fat and more fit, not because we want to cater to physical beauty as this important measuring stick that we want to beat up teen girls with... but because thinner, healthier people are also literally going to feel better, feel happier, live longer, etc.
I think that, instead of fat acceptance, there should be some real sensible, engaging programs in schools designed to help the overweight, and that we should also do things about providing healthier food and diet to people who cannot afford it or have limited access to it.
Honestly, such a big topic, and also an emotional one for those who are overweight or have overwieght children or other family members... Maybe the best thing is for this is to "act locally," and, to all take some time to try to encourage our own family members to be in shape and healthy.
