I don't find most commedians laugh-out-loud funny because their
routines are so predictable. However, I respect Bill Mahar because
he has some insightful (albeit disturbing) commentaries. He isn't
afraid to say something controversial just because it has been
labeled as obscene by conservatives.

.... insightful .... c'mon, you can hear and read his "insights" in all the liberal media.

He is very funny. I saw him live a few weeks ago. It was a great show, the man's a genius. He's one of the few people around who's got the guts to slam religion. And I don't find him to be cynical at all.
.... one of the few ? .... Are you kidding ?
Guts ? Are you kidding again ? ..... It takes guts to criticise Islam here in the Low Countries, because if you do, you either have to go underground or you run the risk of getting your throat cut.
... and you don't find him cynical ? .... we dò live in different worlds, I guess.

problem with someone's pointing out the infelicities within
various religious practices, or hypocritical practices, or when
'separation of church and state' gets ignored, or when people
try to force their religion on others. However, I think Mahar
sometimes carries it a bit too far.
Cynical: contemptuously distrustful of human nature and motives.
You have to admit that Mahar is exactly this.

I see him as one of the very few willing to stand up and take a stand against the deluge of outright christian garbage that permeates our culture. If he had no beliefs of his own and just sat back and took shots at everyone else's, then he'd be cynical. But he's a voice for liberal, secular progressivism. He's a positive voice for those ideals instead of just being negative about christian hogwash. Plus he's very funny. So I utterly reject your mistaken notion that Bill Maher is cynical.

This is, without question, a trait Bill Mahar (you, I, Shav, and
other so-called 'liberals'😉 share.
I'm glad he's willing to take a stand on the 'Christian garbage'
largely because most of the stuff he takes on isn't 'Christian'
at all.
However, he has a tendency to throw the baby out with the
bathwater at times on a variety of topics, especially religion,
which (despite what you might maintain) can in fact have
a positive impact upon people.
