    I love this song. It captures an idealistic slice of the 1960's ethos.
    Joni wrote the song in a moment of inspiration. So excited was she, that she called Judy Collins at 0300, sang it for her... and didn't have to beg much to to enlist Judy's superior voice for recording.

    It's impossible to say but that poignancy may be related to her ambivalence in giving up her child for adoption at the age of 21, when the child's father shot through leaving her dirt poor and unable to cope with the thought of raising her daughter on her own or giving up her career.
