During peacetime, the economy usually decides elections and the party in power fears economic downturns.

Now Boxer's California Senate seat is being eyed by several Republicans.

Is Boxer safe in deep-blue California, or will she face party-in-power trouble?

True. Having said that, do you think it possible that the eoncomy is tinkered with to win or lose elections?

Yes.

Example:

pet-environment stimulus projects by Obama
tax cuts for the rich and the dead (let's call it a death tax, they said about the inheritance tax) by Bush
I think that right now Obama is playing more of the bad guy, because he just thinks spending and giving out entitlement health care benefits happens to be both the cure for all that ails america and something that makes a lot of people feel good, happy, and proud of themselves... just before an election year.

Pretty much regardless of what Obama does, the economy will probably pick up again, and in three years time, Obama will probably claim his policies have done the job. However, the recovery might not be apparent in one year's time, and the Dems will probably lose quite a few seats in Congress.

Of course! That's the point of Democracy isn't it?

I suppose we could just take what we wanted, but the damn cops keep interfering with our capital acquisition!

I agree, most likely a Democratic loss (however moderate) at midterm, followed by a possibly strong but competitive re-election campaign (results too hard to predict this early on).
