Another flaw is to ascribe the right wing tag to my good self, I am as opposed to the restrictions on personal freedoms advocated by the right as I am to the economic restrictions advocated by the left.

The excessive viewing of games, the bums on seats spectators, the entire media approach to sports and the powerful discourses create the competition discourses and unsocial results.
As an aside I feel the Olympic games should have their sports drawn out of a hat immediately after the present games finish, to give the next host nation a chance to prepare. All countries from around the world should contribute 1 or 2 games each of an indigenouos nature. The Olympics indirectly cause alot of social unrest, including bullying to some degree. They promote that 'competition' discourse with all its appendages that you talked about and the sports are Westernised to hell which gives a huge advantage to Western countries. Non-Western countries have to create a Westernised sports infrastructure to participate in the Olympics/world championships etc and that permits the symbiotic values and morals to seep in to the host society.
So yes less of the game structures we have in place now would definitely be more healthy for our societies, and would decrease bullying however a different sports approach with an overall more inclusive and creative, localised/community based model would also be effective.
