I disagree - the world cup and the olympics are symptoms, not causes.

Abolishing the olympics wont stop nationalistic behaviour.
The olympics and the world cup are not symptoms of nationalistic behaviour, they're celebrations of diversity in a sporting event.

If you ever were at such an event you would see that the atmosphere in such events is one of celebration. Matches are just 90 minutes each, the party lasts for the whole month.

The best example of nationalistic behaviour can be found at the "United" Nations .. a misnomer if ever their was one.

Let me rephrase - some of the behaviour we see at the world cup and the olympics is nationalistic in nature (I refer you to some of the world cup threads in the general forum, for example), but this isn't caused by the events themselves.

I think nationalism is too strong a word to say people want their country to do well.

Also, in the general forum, I think I never saw anyone putting down other countries(unless as a joke) but I DO agree that some nationalistic groups try to extend the support for country in football terms to ethnical superiority. But they're clearly a minority.

Just that the olympics and the world cup are bad examples, since there is a much more festive atmosphere than in club competitions.

I agree - there is a difference between wanting your country to do well and nationalism.

However, we can see people posting anti-German chants in the general forum (despite the fact that England may not even be playing Germany), along the lines of "one world cup and 2 world wars" etc.

Bizarrely, people are saying England will be sending germany home (depite the competition being held on Germany).

All over England, people are wearing copies of WW2 helmets with anti-German slogans on them. Etc etc.

And if England are drawn against Argentina, we get chants about the Belgrano and the Falklands.

None of this is about wanting your team to do well.

Well, difference in perspective, I guess. People wear that for fun and mocking historical differences. I honestly don't see it as nationalism since I don't take those words/actions seriously, but I see your point.

Making a joke about gays doesn't make someone a homophobe, in my opinion. (depends on the joke, of course)

I'm sorry but I just don't get it, why would you care if your country wins the world cup or the olympics? if you truely loved just the sport you'd be happy to watch the best in the world compete and care little about who won...

Because Portugal is part of who I am.

Do you love your parents and children only because of their characteristics or also because they're part of who you are?

Good refutation, but regardless of your logic, even though I love my child I couldn't give *$^& if my country wins the world cup, olympics are any particular sport..
As far as I'm concerned patriotism is only useful in times of defence against an aggressor, ie Germany in World War II.
