About a week ago, a Mercedes was attacked and robbed about 3 meters from my front door. They pinned the car to a signal post with their own car and kicked the windows until they broke, screaming "Give me your money!!" The girls inside were allowed to run away fortunately, but their car was really smashed up and of course they were robbed.

I want to get a gun so if this ever happens within sight of my balcony I can remove some of these threats to the people, or at least scare them away from doing this crap in front of my building. What do you think?

BTW, a funny fact - the car's license plate was "CASH4U2". That doesn't of course mean I excuse the event, but it's amusing. Dumb girls.

You mean a Desert Eagle? I'm not a very experienced shooter, and I think it would be too strong to easily handle. I like the .357. A carbine of some sort might be good too.

I wonder if that would have happened if the car had a NRA license plate... or even just a sticker.

I think a gun would be in order... did you see it happen?

No, but I heard it. I was in the garage not far away. I was cautious about investigating (I scanned the street from the little ground level windows in the garage, but my field of vision did not let me see the scene from in there) so they were gone before I got there.

Quite a violent event... I would say those criminals are only a step or two away from really hurting someone. If you had the gun with you would you have run out faster?

I wouldn't have had it with me, as I was in the garage, and no, I probably would not have.

Well...it's hard to say, actually. I don't know what I would have done.

However there are apartments which directly overlooked the event, and from that position, I would have been able to intervene.

I'm staying with my folks, and I can't have a gun here. However I think I landed a second job which would give me over 40 hours a week, which should pay for an apartment and a gun.

I'm thinking for basic security having a gun, a video camera that's easy to use, and a paintball gun to mark them and get their attention. The latter two are so that I wouldn't have to resort to shooting people unless necessary.

I have never seen an event like that before, so I don't know what my reaction would be either. I have always lived with dogs and they tend to let you know when someone is around and may be a deterrent to anything happening to my home... but they would not have stopped what you are talking about. I like the paintball gun idea... maybe even a potato gun, which could leave a good mark, but is a one shot deal 🙂

I live in the middle of the city in a three story apartment complex with no yard. We can't really do the guard dog thing.

I've been in situations like this on a number of occasions when I worked for a security firm a few years ago and I found on every occasion involving armed thugs, the perps were basically cowards with no training or ability and no understanding of 'speed and control'. They are invariably unable to control the situation once the unexpected happens and usually rethink things. It's all about "attitude adjustment" if you get my drift. The funniest incident was when one guy wet himself after I 'removed' his weapon before he knew what was happening. He was high on something so it was fairly easy I admit, but I still broke three of his fingers.

I can understand how you feel. It probably made you feel angry and a bit useless too. I can understand how you might feel that if you had a gun you could have done more to help. I know I have been in situations where I have been angry with myself afterwards for the little I was able to do.

Sadly though, I'm pretty sure that if you started shooting then there would have been a lot worse outcome for those involved as well as those who weren't. You may have been fortunate and they may not have had guns but they or their buddies certainly would do the next time they came around. Probably wouldn't waste time kicking in the windows next time either.

Brandishing and discharging a firearm within city limits is a serious offense, even if you are trying to prevent the commission of a crime. You'd better check the gun laws in the state you live in. Also, you might want to consider taking a handgun safety class as well as a conceal carry class and apply for a permit.

Here's how it works: You may NOT use deadly force against a person Unless your LIFE is in danger. Period. Yours wasn't. In some states you may use deadly force in order to prevent a heinous crime, like if the perps were beating the girls up etc. But the girls were no longer being attacked. If you had shot at the thugs the DA would have your butt in jail and you would have to rely on a jury to say if it was proper. You also may Not escalate the situation. You must mitigate. If the thugs did not have weapons and you did, you are escalating. Killing a thug because he's stealing your car it a No No according to the law.

If this incident had taken place more than, maybe, 30 ft away you most likely would have missed the target considering that you have no handgun training.

A semi-auto hand gun, for a novice, is a poor choice. Too many things to remember in a scary situation. Is the magazine inserted properly, racking the slide, pushing the slide release, is the saftey on or off, is the gun double action, single action, double action only, or something in between like a Glock, does it have a grip safety?
You need to spend a lot of time at the range gettin to know the gun you have chosen. Much like playing chess.

The Desert Eagle in 44mag or 50ca.AE is a very poor choice.....too much muzzle jump, not very accurate, and little ability to double tap.
If you're going to buy a handgun, may as well get a carry permit if allowed in your state. Otherwise you'll never have the gun when you need it. Please read the book, "In The Gravest Extreme" by Massod Ayobe (very bad spelling) before doing anything stupid.

Your best choice in guns may be a revolver in 357mag. The 357 may be overkill but it will also take 38 special ammo. Problem is that they only hold 5 or 6 rounds, but you can get reloading clips for them. Your aim is self defense, not an all day shootout. Do your thing and retreat.
I would recommend something like a Ruger, Double Action Only, revolver. Nothing do do but pull the trigger. You don't have to cock the hammer first. It has a bobbed hammer so you can't catch it on something causing it to discharge. It also has a hammer block safety so it won't go off if you drop it, or if the gun gets banged around.

Take an NRA safety course, self defense course (with live fire), or better yet, take the NRA instructor course.

Happy shooting!

What was the question anyway?

I wouldn't start shooting willy nilly. In fact I was thinking of having a blank as the first round so that I could get the assailants' attention. Bullets would only be discharged if needed to save a life. That's why I'd also have a paintball gun and a video camera. I guess the paintball gun would take the place of the blank.

I don't think I'd want to carry it. Like I said, I think having a balcony on an elevated level overlooking the street would be an excellent post for dealing with this kind of thing outside my front door anyway.

Good. Then I could kill them.
