    A more apt analogy is as follows:

    A dead person is found in a park, riddled with bullet holes. A guy stands next to the corpse, a smoking gun in hand. He says: "I totally killed that guy, but I am innocent." Then an investigation commences.

    if a dead person is discovered, the coroner is dispatched. If the coroner suspects foul play an autopsy is ordered. What the autopsy discovers determines whether or not an investigation is in order.
