Anyone tell me why good looking American girls aspire to be cheerleaders? I thought this was the age of women's liberation! Or amI missing something?

Where does your idea that being a cheerleader is not compatible with being liberated come from? Some girls like to be sexy and enthusiastic, to express school spirit, to party, to hook up with strong ethletic guys, etc. There's nothing unliberated about these things.
Originally posted by ianpickeringI don't think this is a matter of women's liberation, simply that American social norms are different to British ones. Apparently, many American teenagers (often with the encouragement of teachers etc) think it's de rigeur to either play on the school football team (for the boys) or be a cheerleader for said team (for the girls) in order to become 'popular', and that once you are one of these you can rightly look down on everyone else. I for one hope this coercive attitude to 'being a team player' doesn't spread here!

Don't get me wrong - I'm sure some girls would want to be cheerleaders because they're keen on cheerleading, and some take it very seriously. But when it's such a large proportion of girls who want to do it, there's probably something else going on.
