The Chinese have made it clear that certain websites (relating to Falung Gong, and human rights sites) will be blocked to foreign journalists covering the Games from China.
I find this unacceptable. By going to China and accepting Chinese rules on this matter, the press will be endorsing Chinese internet censorship.
Or is it a question that people should behave as guests and follow all the rules.
I for one will not be watching or following any events from the Games.

Way to make a moral stand there knightboy!
Wouldn't want to, you know, stop buying products from China or anything and ....Nooooo, that would mean it would actually cost you something to stick to your morals. Can't have that now can we!
Originally posted by uzlessI could care less about the human rights abuses, we expect them from the Chinese. I'm just tired of having the Olympics overhyped like some planetary Bacchanalia of sport. The event never lives up to its billing, and all that's left to show is an empty Olympic village that the host country's taxpayers are on the hook for. Meanwhile, the bureaucrats of the Olympic Host Committee travel the globe looking for some other group of suckers, er, new host country for an upcoming Olympics hoo-haw that will outdo the last one. When will people learn?

Originally posted by der schwarze RitterFunny. Most venues, if planned properly, end up with a bunch of facilities they never would have had, contaminated land cleaned up that never would have, an improved public transit system, and it's all done at a fraction of the cost that it would have taken if funded by local governments because of the Millions in Cash given to the host city from the IOC.

Any cost overruns usually pale in comparison to the total cost if funding entirely by tax money and it's done about 20 years faster.

You may not agree with them (and thats completely up to you), but if you are there you should follow the rules regardless, it is there country after all.
Its not like we don;t know how China is already
Chian may breck human rights, but then again so does the UK for example with the detention without charge timelines, thus is it fair for us to point fingers at them ?
Would that not make us hypocrites in a way ?
By not watching you are making a stand, but then will you boycott all China products as well ?
Originally posted by uzlessWhat is the point in boycotting Chinese products?

I don't see what point you are trying to make, other than that you obviously feel quite strongly about it.
Originally posted by uzlessI like your logic, but its wrong. Just because the IOC pumps millions into a city, it doesn't actually make these projects cheaper. And it certainly is not the IOCs job to award the Olympics to cities so that they can be improved.

In fact, I am disappointed that the IOC does not have a plan B for Bejing. The Chinese promised improvements in human rights during the bidding process, which have not happened. The IOC should not say to Bejing, "oh well, you've had your chance. We're giving the Olympics to [some other city]"
In fact I am sick of the IOC awarding the Olympics in an attempt to bring rogue states and enemies of the west "into the fold". Germany 1936, didn't work. Soviet Union, didn't work. China 2008, won't work.
What's next, Iran, North Korea......
Originally posted by RSMA1234I know you must accept their rule, but that does not make such laws right. If I travel to another country I abide by the laws. if I do not agree with a law I will still abide by it, for my own safety. But that will not stop me from thinking its a crap law. And some places I will not travel to, because I think they have crap laws.

I also disagree with the way laws are being changed in the UK (lenght of detention for instance), but I guess I live in a country where I can make my displeasure known (on this forum for instance) without fear of being arrested tomorrow.
So, i do point my finger at Olympic China, just as I point my finger at certain aspects of this country.
Originally posted by knightwestI honestly donlt feel that strongly either way, what I was relating this to was that fact that you said that you where going to boycott the games by not watching them.
What is the point in boycotting Chinese products?
I don't see what point you are trying to make, other than that you obviously feel quite strongly about it.
So will you also be boycotting china products, otherwise what are you going to achive by boycotting the games watching ?
After all you do find their positrion "unacceptable".....
