Hey, isn't this the wrong salute for a civilian? What a poser!

A civilian is supposed to hold the right hand over the heart.

I've never seen anyone salute with the hand over the heart. Over the outside top of the left lung, yes, but never over the heart. (It's shocking how little most people, including almost all politicians and flag-worshipers, know about their own body.)

Well, I suppose the commander-in-chief would be allowed whatever salute he wants. I've seen other presidents salute back (to others saluting him) in this exact way.

I think the bigger story here is that Trump went to France and saw a military parade, and so now he insists on having his own military parade down Pennsylvania Avenue ("the best parade EVER!" ). I blame this on his never having any friends as a child.

What a poser!

The pundits are still out on this one. Here's a POV from the Texas GOP (and I don't think anyone could accuse them of being unpatriotic):

Personally, I think civilian and military rituals should not be confused.

It has actually become something of a tradition in America.

Every President since Pres. Reagan, including both the Presidents Clinton and Obama, have rendered military hand salutes:

While Pres. Obama is not pictured here, you can enjoy images of Pres. Obama saluting via a Duck Duck Go image search:

I'd say if a military member has to salute you, then you should return the salute. In general, you're supposed to hold a salute until it is returned and it is pretty awkward when it isn't.

It's a trivial thing though right wingers screamed when Obama didn't salute and also screamed when he did.
