"We require people to be 21 to purchase alcohol beverages, and 21 to purchase tobacco products.

Why is it so unreasonable to require people to reach a certain level of maturity before making life-altering decisions about their sexuality and identity?"

Well, it seems like Tyler managed to figure it out.

Good thing his mother is rich.

Tough principle to follow if nobody teaches you about how to avoid breeding.

Is she well known for not making any sense at all. Education / knowledge is how we get to make decisions. Everything else is the strategy of ‘suck it and see’.

Raising children is too important to be left to teenagers.

I know plenty of people in the 30s and 40s who shouldn't be raising children. Conversely, I know people who are 18 and 19 who would be awesome at raising children. My daughter is 18 and she would be a better mother than anyone I know (she's kind of a de facto second mother to my 11 month old as it is).

Age is just a number.

vivify: Where we differ is if that boy decides he wants to be regarded as female, it's still his right.

sh76: Not if he's under 18. It's too big a decision to be left to the child.

"Florida v. Disney" thread, page 3.

Reportedly, the girl here is 15 and Tyler Boebert is 17.

Yes, I agree in principle that some people are never mature enough to raise children and not make a hash of it. Some can’t handle alcohol either, at any age. But one cannot pass legislation that says only sensible people shall vote, drink alcohol, have children, or possess firearms. Why? Because the not-sensible people would go to the barricades and start shooting. 😕

Weren't you arguing on the other thread that minimum age limits are needed for life altering decisions? Parenthood seems like one of those important decisions in life.

Statistics and averages are full of numbers but generally speaking with everything else being equal a 30yr old will make a better parent than a 17 yr old. That’s why we have age related prohibitions in spite of some glaring anomalies

Yes, that’s because one cannot pass laws which say only sensible people shall do things. So you have to implement some other criterion, and a minimum age is one fairly practical one. Another one is to require people to undergo some sort of training or education and to demonstrate competence (passing exams), as with driving and practicing medicine. I’d be in favor of a minimum age for parenting plus mandatory participation in parenting classes. Ever hear of shaken baby syndrome? Every prospective parent should have done. But hospitals still treat shaken babies.
