Stupid move by China (I believe Russia has implimented a program as well).
Not only is it stupid to experiment on people like that (giving not properly tested and safety proven drugs), but considering the amount of paranoid bastards on the planet, what’s the reaction going to be if this little pilot of their’s fails?
How many will refuse a vaccine because of it? And how effective will the vaccines be if not enough people use it?

Pffff

At some point you have to experiment on people.

Yes. In clinical trials.

That may be the case.

But let loose a risk analyses:
Chance of something going wrong X impact of it if it goes wrong.

It would be much wiser to err on the side of caution on this matter.

Do you think they’re carrying out so many tests just to be safe?

Or are they collecting other data at the same time? It seems rather strange for a scientist to not want to err on the side of caution on this issue.

I’m not sure what the “high social cost” is. They carried it out over a 5 day period.

And: “not for scientific reasons” certainly sounds like he’s hinting at some other reason for carrying the tests out.

What do you think?

They'll have done safety trials. The real problem is behavioural - it's unclear how effective it is, and people wandering around thinking they're immune could be a problem.
