Anyone else tired of the same old "solutions" offered by the left on the recession, the medicare shortfall, the social security shortfall, and the deficit, and even on paying for the wars? I see no cuts, just tax some more, and when we have more record deficits, tax some more...

Here's an idea. The 2010 defense and defense related budget is set to be around 1 trillion dollars. Cut 2/3rds of it. There is over 600 billion off the deficit right there. As a taxpayer I'm tired of paying for never ending wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and for the ongoing occupations of Germany, Japan, S. Korea, and other places. Roll back the American empire starting now.
Then we can talk about the out of control social spending.
Leonard Burman, an economics professor at Syracuse, has an interesting piece in The Washington Post. He claims that capping tax expenditures from 2013 to 2016 and then indexing them to inflation thereafter would save 14 times as much as capping non-military discretionary spending ($3.5 Trillion).
Doing so of course is sure to make everyone angry (sh76?), but Burman makes some good points and attempts to convince both conservatives and liberals that it may be in their interest to do something like he proposes.

As long as they don't get rid of my mortgage interest deduction, I'm fine with it. 😉
Seriously, I think there are a a heck of a lot of tax expenditures that they would cut before cutting the mortgage interest deduction on conforming purchase money first mortgages.
As such, I'm all for it.
Of course, they should do that AND cut irresponsible spending.

We spend when the eoconomy is good because we have the funds to do so and we spend when the economy is bad because we all know that is the thing to do to get us out of recessions. Just look at how the last stimulus package did for our economy. We were on the brink and Obama single handidly spent billions more to save us all. Soon he plans to save us again with the upcoming 3 trillion dollar spending spree.

Abolish the war on drugs. Legalize marijuana and tax it.
Legalize gambling nation wide,tax
legalize prostitution,tax
These three changes would free up enormous amounts of money as well bring in even more.
Had you ever considered the possibility that legalizing these activities might increase the welfare burden on society? Also, I am fully convinced that it matters little how much money comes pouring into the government. They will find a way to create a massive deficit. Its a spending problem, not a money making problem.
Originally posted by telerionThe problem with tax expenditures is that they've become the cowardly approach to expanding government. Instead of spending an extra $200Bill to enrich Interest Group X, just give them a special $200Bill tax "incentive" or "deduction".

If anyone complains, they can just say "I'm not increasing spending, I'm just cutting taxes". But they're not "just cutting taxes" - while they're cutting taxes for Interest Group X, everyone else's taxes will have to go up (eventually) to pay for it.
I would propose that we put ALL tax expenditures into the general budget with all of the other things the government spends money on.
That way, everyone would be able to see just how much the government is REALLY spending, and we could then we could argue about how much of these tax expenditures are really justified and how much of it is just wasteful corporate welfare.

If prostitution was legal, it would put all of this scum out of business.

On the contrary, the higher the estate tax and the tougher it is to work around, the better it is for me and my firm.
