The Chinese writing system held back China because printing such a complex logographic writing system was a lot harder than individual letters to form words. This gave European countries an advantage printing books on a mass scale.
Population did not hold China back that much. Correlation does not necessarily prove causation and the British keeping Chinese people addicted to opium did not help China. The British empire even forced China to accept opium into their markets by military force. See the Opium Wars.

I am not saying China did not have books, they did. But they were really expensive to mass produce with the Chinese writing system. If China had a more European writing system we might be talking about how the Chinese started the industrial revolution.
