This is interesting:
Seemingly, in California, prison inmates (is that a tautology, by the way?) get paid 1$ a day + a slight sentence reduction if they volunteer to fight fires.
This saves California millions a year.
Now, I think this is quite a good idea. Especially because the prisoners are basically being reintegrated and taught very good skills.
I can understand that some people think otherwise, but that’s a different debate for a different thread.
Now, when these prisoners are released... and this is what’s doing my head in, they’re banned from joining fire departments.
Why can’t an ex-con be a fire fighter?
They’re trained, it’s difficult to get a job as an ex-convict as it is and everyone knows that fitting into society in a productive way lowers the chances of returning to prison.
One would think it was a win-win situation.
Anyone disagree?
